In this collection of published and previously unpublished stories of horror, I offer a look into the minds of people who perpetrate horrors, from acts of stupidity with unintended results to cold-hearted revenge to pure enjoyment to complete indifference. Settings range from 17th-century France in the heart of the werewolf trials to the resurrection of the Aztec black arts to a medicine man’s revenge in the Old West to the depths of Hell to mob vengeance and modern day necromancy to sociopathic serial killers and on to alien worlds in the distant future.

The Farmington Writers Circle Meets Tonight, December 14, 2017, at 6:30 p.m.

zola_leandreThe Farmington Writers Circle meets again on Thursday, December 14, 2017, at at 6:30 p.m. at Entertainmart’s Hardback Café located at 3020 East 20th Street, Farmington, NM.Vicki Holmsten will be reading her short story, “Daphne Catches the Light”, at 6:30 p.m.

“Daphne Catches the Light” is a winter darkness and light story, which won second place in the 2013 Pasatiempo Writing Contest.  Pasatiempo is the weekly arts magazine of the Santa Fe New Mexican.Dr. Holmsten is a writer, editor, consultant, Director of the Bisti Writing Project, board member of the New Mexico State Poetry Society, former professor of English at San Juan College, and one of the founding members of the Farmington Writers Circle and of the 4 Corners Poets.

Also on Thursday, Phil Slattery will lead a discussion on formatting e-books.  We will also open the discussion on having a Writers Meet and Greet social event during Farmington’s summer artwalk.

The mission of the Writers Circle will be to promote Farmington area writers of any genre and skill level, to advise each other on publication, marketing, publicity, using social media, and establishing useful contacts within the local, regional, and national literary communities among many other writing-related topics.  Please feel free to attend one or more of our meetings to see if we can help you.

Anyone is welcome to join our group or to attend our meetings, there are no requirements for membership other than an interest in writing of any genre or style.

The Farmington Writers Circle normally meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 at Entertainmart’s Hardback Café.

A week or so ago, I was contacted by Charlie Fish, editor of FictionontheWeb.co.uk.  He asked to include my short (flash fiction) story “Murder by Plastic” in an anthology he will be publishing in January.  I happily agreed and provided the bio notes he requested.

Originally published by Everyday Fiction in 2013, Charlie published “Murder by Plastic” on November 17, 2015.  It has garnered quite a few favorable comments and was well-received.

The Farmington Writers Circle Meets Again on July 13

The Farmington Writers Circle will meet on July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Entertainmart’s Hardback Café, 3020 East 20th Street, Farmington, NM.  The topic of discussion will center around lessons learned from the Meet and Greet on June 9, initiating planning for the Winter Meet and Greet (circa November 25). and small projects we can undertake in the meantime to publicize our works.

The night’s reader will be Kevin T. Boekhoff.  Kevin is the author of I Forgot That I Remembered, a humorous look at his life with Parkinson’s disease,  Just Me: Humorous, Helpful and Odd, which consists of stories from throughout his life, and his gospel ventriloquism book, I Know What You Know, Adventures in Gospel Ventriloquism, featuring Youtube links to the scripts in the book. He also writes a daily devotion called “Tugs & Nudges” and a series of ventriloquism “pictoons.”

He has won several awards at Humorpress.com and one at the Storyteller. 

He currently challenges himself with ventriloquism. This includes the making of characters, writing of skits and performing them. He says this helps him fight Parkinson’s by doing things he enjoys.

Just a reminder that the Farmington Writers Circle Meet and Greet networking event is today, Friday, June 9, at Artifacts Gallery, 302 East Main, in downtown Farmington (NM)  from 5:00 to 9:00 during the city’s Artwalk .

This event is open to everyone with an interest in writing or reading.  Its purpose is for local area writers of fiction and non-fiction to socialize and make networking contacts with the public and other writing professionals such as editors, publishers, reporters, bloggers, teachers, and anyone else interested in writing.  Novices, amateurs, students, and professionals of all genres, styles, and media are all welcome.  Anyone with an interest in reading or teaching any type of writing is definitely welcome.  This is an opportunity to meet your favorite local authors.

Bring business cards and any other handouts such as flyers or pamphlets to pass out to your new contacts.

There will also be book-signings and readings by several local authors and writers (a list will be posted soon).  Artifacts Gallery will also provide a salsa-tasting.  Refreshments will be available.

“This novelette is a quick and very entertaining read. It opened with a grabber (“Tell me again whey we have to kill this guy…”) and kept pulling me in from there. Frank Martinez is a cop trying to recover from a shooting incident in solitude on an island off the Texas gulf coast. T.J. and Benny are the bad guys. Their hunt and chase on the small island kept me in suspense. It ends with a surprise twist. Slattery proves here he is a good storyteller.”
