Today I found out that my short story “The Slightest of Indiscretions” will appear at Fiction on the Web on April 19.  I would like to thank publisher Charlie Fish for publishing this story.

“The Slightest of Indiscretions” is a departure from my work in horror and is mainstream literature, although it still a dark edge.  The story center around a brief but intensely eerie encounter between a park ranger and a strange couple who enter the bookstore where he is working.

Please drop by Fiction on the Web on April 19 and check out the story.

Today, my short story, “A Good Man”, was published at http://www.fictionontheweb.co.uk.  Many thanks to Charlie Fish at Fiction on the Web for publishing this, one of my best stories.  “A Good Man” is not horror, but a modern crime drama.  Mr. Fish describes the story thus:  “On the day before her death from lung cancer, Christopher’s mother tells him a secret about his father that may change his perception of his parents forever…”   Doug Hawley, in the first comment on the story notes:  “Lots of detail examining an old question of how do you judge a person’s life. It left me wondering.”

Please drop by Fiction on the Web any time and check out “A Good Man”.

Publication Announcement: “Faust” to appear in The Literary Hatchet

Faust--detail of an illustration by Friedrich Gustav Schlick

My horror poem “Faust” has been accepted by The Literary Hatchet and will appear in their next issue, which is slated for December 15.

“Faust” is my take on a moment in the story of Faust, the legendary professor and scientist of medieval Germany, who sold his soul to the devil in return for all knowledge.  I examine Faust’s feelings in that moment just after he has sold his soul and the devil (Mephisto) has vanished, when he is left to contemplate in solitude the consequences of his decision.

I would like to thank Stefani Koorey, Michael Brimbau, and the staff of The Literary Hatchet, for reprinting this, my favorite of all the poems I have written to date.  “Faust” has previously appeared in The Hollins Critic (1992) and Blood Moon Rising (2013).

Please feel free to visit The Literary Hatchet on December 15 or purchase a hard copy and check out “Faust” on December 15, or at any time for that matter.

Today my short story “Dream Warrior” was re-printed by Fiction on the Web.  Many thanks to Charlie Fish and his team for selecting this, one of my favorites of my own stories.

Fiction on the Web sums up the story beautifully:  Phil Slattery’s powerful revenge epic about a man who visits his Mexican grandfather for spiritual guidance after a violent crime results in the death if his fiancée.

The story was published this morning and so far I have received two comments on it:

  1. quite literally a rite of passage, mystical and with an interesting payoff, one which Miguel may have to reckon with in time. some very good writing and characterisation.
    well done

    Mike McC

  2. I agree with Mike, this is a rite of passage, complex and rich with significance. The cultural invocations are vivid and intense, the work of a writer in his/her full stride. The future for Miguel, who knows? The readers interest is fully engaged with what is to come….. Thank you,
    Ceinwen

Check out the story when you have the chance.

“Dream Warrior” was originally published by “Sorcerous Signals” in 2013.

Publication Announcement: “Warehouses and All”

Around 8:30 tonight I sent off a bit of nanofiction entitled “Warehouses and All” to Beechwood Review, hoping to hear from them in 1-2 weeks.   I went to the grocery and when I returned about 9:15 I checked my e-mail to find that it had already been accepted.   The editor, Richard Heby, commented “Touching, sharp, very good Phil! I’ll accept it for issue 2.”

The story is based on a story told to me by the assistant agricultural attache to Sudan (though the story is set in Somalia), when I happened to meet her on a tour to the temple of Luxor, when I was stationed at the US embassy in Cairo in 1989.  “Warehouses and All” was first published in Six Sentences (www.sixsentences.blogspot.com) on September 22, 2009.

I do not know when issue 2 will come out, but issue 1 was for Summer, 2015.  I assume issue 2 will be out soon.

Many thanks to Mr. Heby for accepting my work.

Publication Announcement: CCQ has accepted “Sorcerer”

Farmington, New Mexico, March 20, 2015
Farmington, New Mexico, March 20, 2015

A few minutes ago I received an e-mail saying that my short story “Sorcerer” has been accepted by Creepy Campfire Quarterly.  It will appear in their third issue, which will appear on July 20, 2016.   Please check them out and buy a copy or two.  Also check them out on Facebook.  There are several users with a name containing “creepy campfire”, but theirs is Creepy Campfire Quarterly.  Their Facebook address is  https://www.facebook.com/Creepy-Campfire-Quarterly-CCQ-1580122065546001/timeline/.  Their website is http://www.emppublishing.com/creepy-campfire-quarterly.html.

This marks the first time I will be paid for my prose (not a lot, but enough to know my work is appreciated).

“Sorcerer” is a tale of horror and revenge about a modern day sorcerer who comes out of retirement to take a unique vengeance on the callous Don Juan who seduced and abandoned his daughter, who dies during childbirth.

Many thanks to Jennifer Word and her staff for publishing my work.

This is the sixteenth time “Sorcerer” was submitted for publication since I first sent it out on December 29, 2012.   Persistence pays off.  However, I feel lucky that this was only the 16th time.   I know a lot of stories have to be submitted many more times before they finally see success.   I think I have at least a few that surpass sixteen submissions (though I haven’t compiled the statistics yet).
