Phil Slattery’s Sci-Fi Novelette “Alien Embrace” Is Free on Amazon Kindle Today

In celebration of the birth of Polish astronomer Aleksander Wolszczan, discoverer of the the first exoplanets and pulsar planets, who was born on this date in 1946 in Szczecinek, Poland, my novelette Alien Embrace is free on Amazon Kindle today.  Dr. Wolszczan has been awarded the Prize of the Foundation for Polish Science, Beatrice M. Tinsley Prize, and the Order of Polonia Restituta.

In Alien Embrace, Logan Rickover, owner of a hardware store in a small town in Kentucky, has lucid dreams of life as an astronaut that intrude upon his life at any moment. Which of his lives is real? The quiet paradise of Danville or the terrifying jungle world of Stheno D?

Ron Baker commented, “This short has exactly what I like in science fiction: planet exploration and bizarre otherworldly aliens, in this case insectoid. The horrendous purpose the aliens have for the hapless astronauts who make planetfall to find the numerous previous missing exploration teams is grisly. I love the mystery of the planet and the authors device of alternating from the aliens bizarre perspective then switching to the astronauts point of view.”

I will be offering more of my works for free in the upcoming weeks.  Check back often.

Phil Slattery Update: Children’s Book “Bobby the Brown Pelican”

An update on my new project: a children’s book.

Phil Slattery, 2015

Over the weekend I completed the first draft of the text for a children’s book, which I first conceived over ten years ago while living on the Gulf coast.  It has roughly 1,350 words.  I have written it for kids around first to second grades, and it is entitled Bobby the Brown Pelican.  It is about a young pelican who is afraid to dive into the water to catch fish.  His dad teaches him how to do things in spite of being afraid.   His parents are very supportive of him  I have written the book, so that a parent can read it to his/her child and discuss it with the child as they go.

This is the first time I have written a children’s book.  I know this is a specialized form of writing targeted toward a specific audience, so I will be asking people to…

Update: April 28, 2019, 8:45 pm

I just now finished the first draft of a children’s book entitled “Bobby the Brown Pelican”. I plan to market it on Amazon. It is handwritten now. I hope to have it typed up tomorrow. Estimated length: 1,350 words more or less (average number of words per line x number of lines on a page x number of pages).

Update April 27, 2019–The Charade

The day before yesterday, I started a sci-fi short story that I have since named “The Charade”. Today, I finished the first draft in pen and have started typing it up, editing as I go. The first draft should be a Word document tomorrow (which is actually later today as it is 1:09 a.m. right now). I will submit it to Fiction on the Web, an English online magazine. They have published several of my works before.

“The Charade” is set in the distant future in a bunker in the Rockies after a battle in which the US has defeated an alien invasion force. The alien commander has been captured and, at the story’s outset, is about to undergo an extremely hostile interrogation by the US commander. Of course, things are not what they seem.

This should be a really good story, if I can pull it off. Wish me luck.
